A biopsy is a small sample of tissue taken from the body for pathologic examination and diagnosis. Breast biopsies allow us to determine the origin of abnormalities that appear in mammograms, breast ultrasound and breast MRI. The results determine if the abnormality is benign, atypical or a malignant cancer.

At the Breast Care Center, we perform minimally invasive imaging guided needle biopsies. These are done utilizing ultrasound, stereotactic or MRI guidance. Before any of these procedures, please notify the radiology physician and the technologist if you are pregnant, on medication (including herbal supplements), or are allergic to any medication.

Again, approximately 70% of women who receive imaging guided needle biopsy will discover the abnormal tissue is benign (non-cancerous).
